Notice to Residents in the Special Flood Hazard Area
Dear Resident:
This notice is being sent to you because your property is in or near the Special Flood Hazard Area. This area is the portion of Chickasha determined to have a high risk of flooding, placing you and your property at risk. Please take a few minutes to review the following information. If you have any questions about the information in this letter, please contact the City of Chickasha Emergency Management Director at (405) 222-6000 or at 117 N 4th Street. Detailed information can be found on the City website.
Flooding in Chickasha
Heavy rains occasionally cause flooding damage in Chickasha. Properties along the Washita River, Line and Congo Creeks have been particularly susceptible to flooding. Heavy rains in 1981, 1983, 1984, 1986, 1987, 1989, 1990, 1993, 1965, 1998, 2000 and 2007 caused flooding and damage to buildings in these areas. Other areas with high flood danger include areas along low lying areas, as well as the drainage area north of USAO. Your property is in one of these high risk locations, placing you in danger of damage as well.
Flood Insurance
Homeowner’s insurance policies do not cover flood damage. To protect your home and possessions from flooding, you must purchase flood insurance. Fortunately, the City of Chickasha’s work to protect the city from flood losses makes available to you flood insurance policies from the National Flood Insurance Program at a 5% discount. If you do not already have flood insurance, talk to your insurance agent.
Before a Flood:
Rake up and bag leaves as often as possible before storms. Leaves clogging storm drains are the primary source of most flood occurrences.
Do not dump or throw anything into drainage ditches or streams—it is a violation of the City Code and blocked drainage ways cannot carry water.
Clean drains around your home, including roof gutters, downspouts, drain inlets, pipes. drainage ditches and driveway culverts.
Always check with the Community Development Department, Building Division (222-6010) before doing any work on your property. Permits may be required to ensure that your work does not cause unintended problems.
During A Flood:
Tune in to the Chickasha emergency radio station, 105.5 FM.
Report any local flooding or severe runoff to the Police Department (222-6050).
Do not walk or drive through flooded areas.
Be careful of downed power lines and displaced animals in the water, especially rattlesnakes & rats.
Watch your step for debris underfoot, like broken glass
Please visit the City’s website to get more detailed information about the flooding danger to your property. For more information, you can also find resources at the Chickasha Public Library.
