| LINKS | Most consider the
threat of tornados to be the primary weather safety issue in Oklahoma, but few
realize that the damage done by flooding in our area is as devastating to the
victims as most tornados. Below is a picture of the extent of flooding in the
downtown area during the August 2007 floods.
Notice to all Chickasha Residents Notice to all Chickasha Residents in the Special Flood Hazard Area Notice to Lending Institutions and Real Estate and Insurance Agents Chickasha has a number of creeks and tributaries that are susceptible to flooding during heavy rains, posing a threat to safety and property. Over one-third of the city is located in Special Flood Hazard Area (SFHA). Areas along the Washita River, Line Creek and Congo creeks have been particularly susceptible to flooding. Heavy rains in August of 2007, devastated both residential and commercial property in these areas. However, your property need not be located in the SFHA to sustain flood damage. When drainage courses or storm drains become clogged, they will backup and overflow causing property damage to even upland structures. To find out whether or not your property is in a Special Flood Hazard Area, or if you have any questions about the flood hazard in Chickasha, please contact the City of Chickasha Emergency Management Director by phone at (405) 222-6000, in person at 117 N 4th Street, or by email at sachapman@chickasha.org. The City can provide information about the location of your property in relation to the flood zone, Elevation Certificates, flood maps, flood safety and flood preparedness information.
